Seasonal Grounds Worker

Balcaskie Estate, East Neuk of Fife £12.71 - £14.00/hr

Terms: 39 hours per week (Monday to Thursday 8am to 5pm and Friday 8am to 4pm) @ £12.71 - £14.00 per hour. Seasonal role to start as soon as possible and work until end of October 2026 in the first instance.

Balcaskie is a modern working estate at the heart of the East Neuk of Fife. We are committed to cultivating and caring for the natural environment, nurturing local business and supporting our vibrant community. The Estate covers 2000 ha from the coastline at St Monans to Kellie Law and into the hills behind, with a mixture of let farms and in-hand farming operations.
The Anstruther family has been a part of the East Neuk community since the 12th century. Today it is home to Toby Anstruther, his wife Kate and their family, and the estate is a member of the East Neuk Estates group.
Balcaskie Gardens which look straight down to St Monans and across the Forth towards the Bass Rock – were inspired by 17th century French Baroque Gardens. They comprise three broad south-facing terraces and sit within a wider designed parkland and landscape around the main house.
Over the last 20 years Balcaskie Estate has entered a new era introducing organic and regenerative farming and land management practices, focusing on biodiversity, climate resilience and local food production. The garden plays its own part in this story and work is underway both to secure the historical legacy and create a contemporary garden which can be enjoyed by the Anstruther family and occasionally opened to the public.

Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated and hard-working seasonal Grounds worker to join our small Garden Team. You will be part of the wider Gardens/Forestry/Wildlife Conservation Team and will need to enjoy and have experience of physically demanding outdoor work in all weather. You will have basic grounds maintenance experience and skills and an interest in and affinity with machinery and small engines plus the desire to acquire more skills and technical expertise in these areas. An eye for detail, ability to follow instructions closely, flexibility, adaptability and a sense of humour will all be appreciated. You will report to the Grounds Supervisor who will set your daily tasks but will also need to be comfortable working on your own at times as other members of the Garden Team work on a part-time basis.
Above all we are looking for a positive work ethic and the aptitude and enthusiasm to learn and take instruction rather than qualifications and previous experience.

Main work areas
• Lawncare, grass cutting and strimming
This includes formal lawns around Balcaskie House, driveways, wildflower meadows and a small number of external sites including Bowhouse, a local food market venue run by the Estate. We have a range of different mowers (ride-on/rotary/cylinder/tractor mounted topper and two wheel tractor with power scythe) and strimmers. Where possible we are moving towards battery operated equipment and are introducing robotic mowers.

• Hedge cutting
Formal yew and box hedges and topiary along with looser wildlife hedges.

• Machinery maintenance
This includes assisting the Grounds Supervisor with regular weekly checks, ensuring that machinery is kept clean and in safe working order and learning to fix any more complex problems as they arise.

• Landscaping projects
Possible projects could include constructing paths, extending and preparing beds and lawns, installing new border edges, hedge and tree planting, clearing and installing drains and irrigation systems. Willingness to learn new land management skills is essential.

• General horticultural tasks & garden systems
As required help Garden Team with planting, weeding, pruning, leaf collection, composting, chipping and harrowing paths. Occasionally assist Forestry & Wildlife Conservation Team with tree/hedge planting, pest control, management of pernicious weeds, emptying biomass boiler, supplying logs to house, moving and maintaining garden furniture and so on.
The successful candidate must adhere to the Estate’s health and safety procedures at all times.
Full driving licence required.
Full training will be provided for all aspects of this role as needed but we expect you to be enthusiastic and willing to learn new skills and to work to a high standard of finish.
Salary and benefits
• Salary: £12.71 - £14.00 per hour (39 hour week) depending on experience.
• Annual leave: 30 days per annum (pro rata for this role)
• Additional benefits: PPE, work boots and waterproofs.
• Balcaskie butchery discount.

Please send your CV and covering letter in strict confidence to info@balcaskie.com. Potential candidates will be invited to work with the Garden Team for a half a day and attend an informal interview – travel expenses will be paid.
