Forestry Manager

Anstruther, £24-£28k

An exciting and new opportunity has arisen on Balcaskie to become the Forestry Manager where you will help shape and deliver the Estate’s objectives for the woodlands and become part of a forward thinking, dynamic and skilled team.
Balcaskie is a modern working estate at the heart of the East Neuk of Fife, committed to cultivating and caring for the natural environment, nurturing local business and supporting their vibrant community.
Balcaskie’s organic woodlands extend to 180 Ha and contains a varied mixture of native broadleaves, commercial conifer blocks and areas of mixed policy woodland interspersed within the surrounding farmland and the designed landscape around Balcaskie House.
A 10-year Woodland Management Plan has been created to establish objectives for each compartment and balance supply of timber with demand for biomass.
In addition to forestry, the role will include a significant variation, assisting at busy times with the gardens team, conservation work and in-hand farming operation.
The role will have significant autonomy and the ability to equip the enterprise from scratch with suitable machinery and equipment.

Key responsibilities
• Mechanical preparation of sites for planting, tree planting, non-chemical plantation maintenance, mechanical scrub clearance and active management to promote natural regeneration
• Assisting with developing and managing a range of habitats across the Estate to enhance biodiversity and wildlife
• Delivery of the planned pruning, thinning and felling programme in accordance with the Long-Term Woodland Plan
• Assist with the on-site management of external contractors harvesting commercial timber stands for biomass production
• Liaise directly with the Estate Management Team to plan your weekly, monthly and annual work schedule
• Assist with the preparation and management of an annual Forestry Budget
• Ensure Health & Safety responsibilities are fulfilled at all times, both for your work and those around you
• Maintain machinery, working environment, general equipment and PPE to a high standard
• Uphold and promote the shared values of Balcaskie Estate

Essential Skills
• Knowledge and proven experience of the basic principles of Woodland Management and the desire to work to a high standard
• An understanding of the logistics and timings of forestry operations and the ability to use this knowledge to organise your own work
• Chainsaw experience and appropriate certificates, including chainsaw maintenance, cross-cutting and large tree felling
• Experience of tractor driving and extracting timber using tractor-based forwarders and winches
• Planting of trees and hedges.
• Communication skills for effective management with estate team and contractors

A practical and methodical work attitude is required together with the ability to demonstrate energy and effectiveness. A clean Driving License, mature attitude and clear communication skills are essential.

This role will be full time and comes with a competitive package commensurate with experience. The use of an Estate vehicle will be provided as well as accommodation if required. Additional training will be provided as part of our ongoing training and investing in skills

Salary range £24-28k
